Teach your children the TRUTH about Juneteenth & Black Emancipation
Juneteenth is truly a celebration of Black freedom and resilience, and a reminder of our ongoing fight for liberation. While mainstream culture has focused on barbecues and days off from work, this guide will help you to reclaim the true meaning of Juneteenth and celebrate the ancestors who fought for our freedom.
Our ancestors paved the way for their own freedom through everyday acts of resistance and resilience. While typically books focus on the troops who marched into Galveston declaring freedom in 1865, the true spirit of Juneteenth extends so much further than that. That's why we must illuminate and celebrate the ways in Black folks resisted and overcame the institution of slavery.
With 16 book recommendations, over 70 questions and activities, and detailed parent's notes on how to answer questions about slavery and race. Our goal is to make it simple for you to talk about slavery and Juneteenth as a family. Together we will 1) celebrate the ways in which our ancestors paved the way for their own legal freedom; 2) honor the ways in which our ancestors resisted and overcame the institution of slavery; and 3) share in the joyful memory of our ancestors learning of their legal emancipation.
